Islanders back on winning streak... After suffering a huge defeat in by the hands of Solent & Gosport Devils just two weeks ago the Peterborough Islanders knew they needed to pick them selves up, dust themselves off and get back down to doing what they do best, and play some excellent hockey and win games. As Swindon came out on to the ice with just over two lines of players and a netminder the Islanders knew this game wasnt to be taken lightly because earlier in the season the Islanders beat Swindon 4 - 2 playing with just 10 men and a netminder. Starting the game with pace, both teams were looking for the win, but it was soon obvious that Swindon just didnt have the legs to skate with four lines of fit, determind and passionate Islanders. Just over 14 minutes gone in the period Luke Merrick of the Wildcats earned himself a 2 minute penalty for cross checking, and with just 34 seconds gone Ross Horsley scored the first goal of the game with an excellent play from James Pentecost; Quickly followed by another Power Play goal with a pass back to the point by Nathan Pollard, to Dave Micheli who shot the puck towards the net for a waiting Dan Needham to redirect the shot right through the netminders wide five-hole giving the Islanders a 2 - 0 lead at the end of the first period. Entering the second period the Islanders were firmly in control of the game and the Wildcats were evidently looking for some way to reenergise themselves with just over 2 minutes gone Jonathan Brammall followed up his shot on net and got too close to the Swindon netminder for their liking causing a ruck around the net. Not willing to see his captain out numbers Dale Jowett stepped up and took hold of Ian Clark and dropped the gloves behind the net. While the two referees were struggling to remove Jowett from Clark Jonathan Brammall and Richard Wojciak decided to drop the gloves and go to centre ice to battle it out. Once calm had been restored and the penalties dished out the Islanders got right back to business and took the score to 3 - 0 when the puck fell to Nathan Pollard in front of an open net. But just 5 minutes later Swindon got themselves one back as the Islanders were unable to change lines due to the pressure Swindon applied. With just over a minute left on the clock and fresh legs on the ice for the Islanders a tired and frustrated Swindon line tried their hardest to get Leon Groom to drop the gloves. Uninterested by the fight Groom continued to skate hard to the net and lit the lamp with an excellent play from both Steve Wren and Dave Micheli, ending the 2nd period 4 - 1. Starting the 3rd period with Tired legs Swindon knew they needed to dig deep and strike hard earning themselves their second goal of the night with 3 minutes gone and then again 5 minutes later bringing the scored to 4 - 3 in favour of the Islanders. Realising the pressure this put them under the Islanders again rose to the occasion, increasing the score line to 5 - 3 with an excellent first senior goal for Mitch White Assisted by Nathan Pollard and a sixth and final goal by Ross Hosley assisted by James Pentecost and Craig Lazenby with just over two minutes left to play. Angered by the score line and the loss of a fight earlier in the game Ian Clark decided that he once more would like to lose a fight again to Dale. Away from the action Stuart Dane was ensuring that Adam Coakley didnt get involved and needed the protection of his brother Andrew. Unwilling to see Dane outnumbered Connor Stokes stepped in and went toe to toe Andrew Coakley and earned the victory. As the final buzzer sounded, the Islanders took the 'W' with a score of 6 - 3 |
