After winning their opening league game last weekend the Dalrod Islanders were hoping for more of the same in their cup opener against the Lee Valley Lions.
The first period started sluggish for the Islanders and they failed to create many cutting edge chances, although some good saves from the Lee Valley netminder prevented the Islanders from taking the lead on several occasions. It took until the last minute of the period for the Islanders to take the lead, after a smart exchange between Conor Pollard and Shaun Yardley, the puck came to Nathan Pollard on his backhand and he made no mistake putting it into the top corner and sending his team into the period break 1 goal up.
The Islanders knew the first period wasn’t good enough and they would have to up their game to take the points, and they certainly did that. Mitch white got his first goal of the season, after a strong skate from Connor Stokes, White was there to pick up the rebound and put it into the roof of the net. And it was another first goal of the season four minutes later, Conor Pollard found himself with plenty of time and space on the powerplay after a nice pass from Yardley and send a quick wrist shot into the top corner. Just a minute later and it was 4-0, Clint Herring sending a slapshot in from the blue line which the goalie didn’t see and the Lions immediately called a time out to try and settle their team. This didn’t do much good as Conor Pollard got his second of the night with a quick shot catching the Lions goalie off guard with another assist from Shaun Yardley. The period ended 5-0 and the Islanders were in complete control going into the third.
Not much to write about in the third period, no further goals from either team, but the Islanders missed some big chances to extend their lead, and Dan Lane make some great stops to keep his shutout. There was however a fight between Connor Stokes and Simon Geldart after a hit from behind on Yardley that Stokes was not happy about. Some punches thrown by both guys, but Stokes landed the majority of them and took the win.
Man of the Match was Dan Lane who was excellent throughout.
The Islanders face the Chelmsford Warriors in the league next and will be hoping to keep up their perfect start.
