DALROD Peterborough Islanders – 5
London Racers – 2
The DALROD Peterborough Islanders played host to the London Racers on Saturday, the Racers looking to close the gap on 2nd place Chelmsford Warriors while the Islanders looked to continue their 100% league record.
This got off to a good start as Nathan Pollard opened the scoring with a shot into the top corner at 26 seconds assisted by Conor Pollard and James Pentecost. Following a Racers penalty for tripping, Pollard then picked up his second at 8:40, again assisted by C Pollard and Pentecost. A moment later the Islanders picked up the first of their penalties as Craig Wallis picked up a minor for delay of game, this penalty was killed comfortably, as was the following Minor penalty for elbowing, despite the Racers having nearly a full 2 minutes of 5 on 3. Leon Groom was next on the scoresheet at 14:16 assisted by Brad Wright and Joe Wilson. A burst of abuse at the referee earned Racers forward Dave Richards a 10 minute misconduct, and two further power plays, (Appleby 2 for boarding at 15:34 and Osbourne 2 for hooking at 18:57), saw the Islanders comfortably ending the period 3-0 ahead.
The second period saw the Islanders a little too relaxed on the power play, and a minute after killing the hooking penalty from P1, Stuart Appleby got the Racers on the board at 22 minutes assisted by Rob Whittleston. At 24:29 The Racers cut the deficit to a single goal when Josh Abbott scored on a breakaway from a Dan Clayton Pass. Islanders coach Steve Johnson called a time out to steady the ship. The result was immediate, and the Racers found their chances evaporating. As tempers began to fray, the penalties began to build. New signing Rayner picked up 2 minutes for Elbowing, 10 seconds later, Racers player Ryan Payne picked up a personal misconduct after arguing with the referee about a penalty shot decision Payne clearly threw his stick at Herring on a breakaway. However Mallett shut the door at Herring on the penalty shot as he tried to go five-hole. A few minutes Later, Jack Payne picked up a minor penalty for interference, however for almost all of the final 5 minutes of the period, the Islanders found themselves on the penalty kill as Rayner, (Misc), Dan Lane, (Slashing), and Connor Stokes, (Cross Checking & Tripping). However, despite being up to 2 players down at a time, they held firm and ended the 2nd period leading 3-2.
The third started with the Islanders killing a late penalty picked up at the end of the 2nd period, however with that dealt with, Nathan Pollard picked up his third, wrong footing the goaltender with a great deke after great build up from C Pollard and Pentecost,at 46:50. Further penalty trouble at 47:10, (Yardley 2 Hooking), and 51:29, (Yardley 2 Slashing), could not hide that the Islanders were in full control, a point made clear during the penalty kill when Connor Stokes finished sweetly after a great heads up pass from Deivid Cetvertak to score a short-handed goal at 51:46. The Islanders weathered further penalties at 54:50, (Groom 2 for Roughing, Barlow 2 for Roughing), and 55:43, (Cetvertak 2 for cross checking), however, with no further score, the Islanders ran out 5-2 winners and maintained their 100% record in NIHL 2.
