DALROD Peterborough Islanders – 8
The DALROD Peterborough Islanders, bolstered with guest appearances from James White, Brad Moore, Scott Robson and Tom Stubley, closed in on the NIHL2 S league title last weekend with a trip to Essex to take on 2nd placed Chelmsford Warriors for the last time this season.
The 1st period started with intent as the Islanders took less than 90 seconds to get on the board as Clint Herring hit the twine first finishing off a rebound on the backhand at 1:27, assisted by N Long & Cetvertak. Further progress could have been slowed by a double minor on Jon Brammall, (7:57, Holding & Roughing), however it was Lithuanian Import Deivid Cetvertak that struck next with a neat finish on the rebound after Bavin had his initial shot saved. Islanders ended the period 0-2 up and in control of the game, despite a later boarding minor on Craig Wallis.
The second started with a similar pace, goal 3 for the Islanders was a great passing play between Pentecost, Nathan and Conor Pollard with the latter applying the finishing touch at 26:26, however a few minutes later, Brad Moore found himself sitting a double minor, (29:30, Cross Checking & Roughing), and taking Warriors’ Ethan Boolkah with him, (29:30, Roughing), a minute after returning to full strength, the Warriors found themselves even handed with Ryan Morgan taking a seat, (32:45, Slashing), giving the a minute of power play. Shortly afterwards, Conor Pollard found the net a second time, after picking up a rebound from an N.Pollard shot from the slot to end the period 0-4 to the good.
Despite a comfortable lead, the final period saw no let-up in pressure, Connor Stokes scored goal 5 with a cool finish at 45:13 Assisted McDonald & Yardley, and on the same shift, 24 seconds later struck again beating the defenseman and shooting the puck into the top corner for goal number 6. Shortly afterwards, Kenny Bavin and Warrior’s Ryan Morgan each sat roughing minors, (49:05), after a brief bout of handbags, the Warriors found themselves down another man as Bailey Chittock found himself in the penalty box, (50:59, Holding). Taking just 19 seconds of the power play, James Pentecost piled on the misery for the hosts with goal 7 after a great tip-In, at 51:18, Assisted by Yardley & McDonald. End exactly 1 minute later, Conor Pollard rounded off the scoring with his hat trick goal after great work behind the net from Pentecost, Nathan Pollard picked out his brother with a pinpoint pass to put the icing on the cake for the Islanders. The match finished a commanding 8-0 to the Islanders. The action however wasn’t completely one sided, with Islanders netminder Dan Lane pulling a Man of the Match winning performance to keep a clean sheet, taking the win, as well as the beers.
The Peterborough Islanders take on the Lee Valley Lions this Saturday (4TH March) with a win giving them the league title.
