The islanders headed into the game missing several key players due to other commitments and players stepping up to play for the phantoms.
The first period did not start well for them as they went 1-0 down to an Anthony Baskerville strike after 3:41 his first of a huge 4 goal haul for him. It didn't take the islanders long and after just over a minute they were level again after Nathan Pollard sent a blistering slap shot over the goalies glove after a neat pass from Conor Pollard. The Islanders then had to kill of a couple of Mustang powerplays as Rob Mcdonald took successive trips to the penalty box for charging and Hi-sticking. James pentecost found himself in space and danced around the defender and cooly finished off the breakaway to earn himself a short handed goal and put the Isles in front. The lead didn't last long as Baskerville scored his second with less than a minute left of the 1st period. However there was time for a moment of magic from the Islanders Conor Pollard. After receiving a pass from Mcdonald he toe dragged the defender causing the defender to fall over in a daze and easily rounded the keeper to send the Islanders to the period break with a narrow 3-2 lead.
Islanders started the second period with a couple of quick goals, Leon Groom found himself in the slot and finished well. Then after some great work behind the net on the powerplay between N.Pollard and Pentecost, John Brammal snuck in from the point to the slot and put the islanders 3 ahead. Baskerville completed his hat trick for the Mustangs and the period ended with Islanders going into the break 5-3 up.
Going into the 3rd period the islanders really needed to step up their game as they were playing well below their usual standards. And they definitely stepped it up, scoring 6 goals in the period. Nathan Pollard started the scoring in the 3rd off with a shot into the top corner from a difficult angle. Clint Herring pulled off a sweet toe drag to get round the defense and put a well placed shot past the goalie to get on the scoresheet. It was all one way traffic in this period, and after a great pass from Callum Medcalf, Nathan Pollard found himself on a breakaway, and after being tripped up he managed to put it through the goalies five hole from his knees to complete his hat trick. And after 10 minutes without a goal, the Islanders then got 2 in one shift! Firstly Conor Pollard getting his second of the night with a nice pass from Pentecost. And Pollard returned the favour almost immediately, after 14 seconds made a great pass to Pentecost to put the islanders goal total into double figures. Baskerville scored his 4th to complete the scoring for the Mustangs, but there was time for one more Islanders goal, Dale Jowett placing a shot through the goalies leg after receiving a pass from N.Pollard.
A slow first 40 minutes could of cost the Islanders, but they persevered and had a strong 3rd to walk away from Gillingham with a comfortable victory.
Man of the match was James Pentecost
