Islanders Move to Complete Roster

The Peterborough Islanders have made further additions to their roster ahead of the new season as the city side look to complete their roster.

The team are delighted to welcome Tom Perkins back for the 2010/11 campaign after a short spell away from the sport. Team Coach Richard Wheatley was happy to welcome the former English Premier League player back to the side: “It's great for the club to be able to welcome Tom back to the fold. Work commitments meant he was unable to commit last season, but his high energy style make him a big signing for the Islanders this year”

The Cambridgeshire outfit also welcomes big forward Tony Dawson back to the club. Part of the Islanders team which conquered the English National League South in 2006/07, the winger has played in over 150 gamed for the club and his return provides the young squad with valuable experience

“Tony's been there and done it all before with the Islanders” said Wheatley “Having him back on the team gives us a big boost up front - he's a big guy who is tough to move and has a cracking shot”

After spending last season playing and studying in North America, former Peterborough under 18 Captain Rob MacDonald has returned to the UK, and was snapped up by the Islanders for the coming season to bolster their defence.

“Rob's got a lot of potential. He's a good skater with strong hands and good hockey instincts. We're all very pleased to welcome him back to the Peterborough hockey setup” said Wheatley

Tough forward Leon Groom also returns for the new campaign. The Peterborough native chipped in in all areas last season and showed he wasn't afraid to drop the gloves when required.

Coach Wheatley said “Leon's a good player on the puck and we'll be looking for him to knuckle down this season and make the most of his ability. He has the potential to be a very good player for this team if he puts the work in”

Islanders Defence Takes Shape

The Peterborough Islanders defensive corps is taking shape ahead of the new English National League season, with the re-signing of three members of last years squad and a new addition to the team.

The Isles welcome back young defencemen Adrian Worth and Zandy Cleves for another year, to the delight of team Coach Richard Wheatley:

“It’s great to have a young player of Zandy’s calibre back in an Islanders shirt. He’s got a bright future in the sport and is a real asset to the team. He’s strong in his own end and is getting better and better going forward; he’ll be a big player for us this season.”

“Adrian’s a big lad with a lot of potential. He put in some good performances against strong teams last year and we’ll be looking for him to continue to work hard on his development and become more consistent.”

The city side also welcome back veteran D man Steve Wren for the coming season. Steve, brother of Islanders netminder Simon Wren, brings with him a wealth of experience and a tenacious work ethic. “Few people are as competitive as Steve, he has a great work ethic and is driven to win. His years of experience and determination make him a key part of the team” said Wheatley.

The Islanders are also delighted to welcome Scott Webster to the team. Scott has been playing for some of the British Militaries top teams for nearly a decade and was a member of the Combined Services team, which brings together the best players from HM Forces to compete in tournaments both in the UK and abroad.

Prior to that he was a member of the Solway Sharks in the Scottish National League, and the Isles newest member happily admits he isn't one to shy away from a physical battle: “I love to throw a few hits out there, and I definitely prefer the more physical games. I’m really looking forward to the new season and the challenges ahead of us” the Isles newest member said.

“Scott’s going to be a great addition for the Islanders” Wheatley said after “He’s a strong, no nonsense guy who is uncompromising in his own end. In the past he has also played as a forward, so if we need to change things up a little bit he also gives us a real option there. He’s already slotted right in with the rest of the team and I am sure he’ll be a hit with the fans”

Islanders Add Four

The Peterborough Islanders have made further moves ahead of the new English National League season, adding four more players to their roster.

Experienced forward David Micheli returns for another season with the club, after an injured plagued campaign last term. Despite still being only 26, Micheli has racked up an impressive 142 points in just 145 games for the city side and Team Coach Richard Wheatley will be looking for the young forward to bounce back this year: “Hopefully David can have an injury free season this time and get back to his best. He’s a natural finisher and we’ll be looking for him to score a few goals for us this season”

The Isles also welcomed back two other players from last seasons squad, as James Pentecost and Callum Worthington-Evans both rejoin the team.

Pentecost was one of the clubs Assistant Captain’s last season, and has developed in to one of the teams most dynamic players going forward. “James is a fast skater with good hands and an eye for the goal, he’s another player we’ll be looking toward to provide some goals this coming season” said Wheatley

Once again Wheatley was happy to see a familiar face between the pipes for the Islanders: “Rob worked really hard last year, and along with the work he has done this summer, Ross (Mackintosh) and I have seen a vast improvement in his game. He’s a great team player and is ready to step up when asked. The chance to play alongside Simon for another year will only benefit him; Wren is such an experienced player”

Evans joined the Islanders half way through last season from the successful Nottingham Lions in the Northern section of the ENL, and once again Wheatley was pleased to see him put pen to paper: “Callum is a quick skater and a good heads up player. He gives us something a little bit different up front and it’s great to see him back.”

The Islanders also welcome new signing Lee Kemp to the team. Lee is another product of the Nottingham development system, and at 6’3” provides the side with an imposing presence at the back. “Lee is a big strong guy who adds another dimension to our defence that perhaps we did not have last season” said Wheatley “He trained with us towards the end of last season and it’s great for the club to get him signed for the coming year as I feel his presence will be beneficial to the whole team”

Islanders Announce Netminding Duo

The Peterborough Islanders have secured the signing of two more key players for the coming season - netminders Simon Wren and Rob McGregor both return to give the city side further strength at the back

Team Coach Richard Wheatley said “It’s great to have both Simon and Rob on board for the new season. We’re building up a great group of players and both of these guys are a big part of that”

Wren, a former member of the Peterborough Pirates, faced more shots than any other netminder in Division 1 last season and was one of the few bright spots in a difficult campaign for the club. He picked up the Players’ Player of the Year Award, as well as the Sue Green Memorial Trophy, for his efforts during the year and Wheatley was keen to emphasise the importance of bringing back the veteran puck stopper: “Wrenny really showed what he is capable of last season, and should be one of the top netminders in the league this year. His knowledge of the game and composure in tight situations is of great benefit to this team”

McGregor is now in his second year with the team and was also pleased to be returning to the Peterborough Arena: “I’m delighted to be back. Last year was tough, but I think we’re all a little bit stronger for the experience and will bounce back a tougher and more determined team”

McGregor said he is also looking forward to a second season with the former Pirates goalie: “Simon’s a great guy and his help and experience helped me a huge amount last season, I’m very happy to be able to play alongside him again this year”

Islanders Secure Four More Signings

The Peterborough Islanders are delighted to welcome back four key members of their squad for the coming season. Forwards Dale Jowett, Dan Needham, Stu Dane and defenceman Jon Tiernan all return for the 2010/2011 campaign.

Team Coach Richard Wheatley was pleased the Islanders were able to bring the quartet back for another year: “It’s good that we have managed to secure the main core of the team from last year. There’s a great deal of potential in this team”

The ‘in your face’, hard skating styles of both Jowett and Needham are sure to be key to the teams success this season as the club looks to bounce back from last seasons disappointment.

“Dale showed glimpses of what he is capable of last season. We’re hoping to get the best out of him this year. Bringing Dan back is also a big plus for us and we’ll be looking for him to pick up where he left off last season” said Wheatley

Hockey fans all over Peterborough will be familiar with Stu Dane. A product of the Peterborough junior development system - only player Coach Ross Mackintosh has represented the Islanders more times than Dane, who has worn his favoured #98 shirt 184 times for the city side. Coach Wheatley was keen to re-enforce the role Dane plays on the team “Everyone connected with this club knows what an important role Stu plays with this club both on the ice and off it and it’s great to see him back for another season”

Big defenceman Tiernan is in his second season with the Islanders, following a strong rookie campaign with the side in which he picked up the ‘Most Improved Player’ award at the teams end of season presentation. The hard work Jon has put in over the summer has not gone unnoticed by Wheatley and player coach Ross Mackintosh and he is sure to play an important role for the team this coming season.

The Islanders kick off their 2010/2011 league campaign at home on Saturday September 11th (face-off 6.30pm) when they welcome Romford Fury to the Bretton Arena. The city side then travel to the Isle of Wight the following night to take on Vectis Tigers.

Peterborough Islanders Re-sign Influential Defenseman

Experienced D man Jonathan Brammall will be back in an Islanders shirt next season. Despite still being only 23 Brammall is a veteran of over 150 games with the team, and Captained the side last season.

“I’m really happy to be back for another year with the Islanders” Brammall said. “The club are looking to rebuild after a disappointing season and I can’t wait to be part of that. I like the way things are shaping up for the club and the team Ross Mackintosh and Rich Wheatley are trying to bring together should be pushing for the top of ENL Division 2 next season”

Brammall, who was selected as the ‘Coaches Player of the Year’ last season, also took the positives from a difficult 2009/2010 campaign for the club “Last year was very tough, but our main goal was to get ourselves back on an even footing after an uncertain summer. While results last season may not have reflected it, we did that and are in a better position now. I am confident we’ll bounce back a bigger and stronger team for the experience”.

Player Coach Ross Mackintosh was pleased Brammall decided to return: “Jon is a great guy to have on the team. He always gives 110%, will stand up for his team mates and has a good head on his shoulders. He continues to improve and I think it speaks volumes about his character the boys chose him as Captain last season”

Islanders Announce Coaching Team for New Season

The Peterborough Islanders ice hockey club are delighted to welcome back Richard Wheatley as a team coach for the coming season. Richard helped coach the team for part of the 2009/2010 campaign, and will work alongside Player Coach Ross Mackintosh for the 2010/2011 season.

Mackintosh said “I am very happy Rich will be joining us for another season. Rich brings with him a wealth of knowledge of both the sport and the local hockey scene, and having him on board to help coach the team will allow me to concentrate more on my own game as well.”

Wheatley also expressed his happiness at returning: “It was an honour to be asked back, and I am pleased to be back. Ross and I have worked together with the South Eastern Conference junior team over the past 12 months and have built up a good understanding which I feel bodes well for the coming season.”

He continued “We are looking forward to putting the team together and moving forward. We want a team that can grow and become stronger, and we believe we can find the right mix of youth and experience to achieve our goals. It’s an exciting time to be part of the Islanders setup”

Wheatley was also hopeful the team could work closely with the Peterborough junior setup this season, which has previously produced Great Britain internationals Craig Peacock and David Clarke.

“We’ll be looking to work with the Peterborough Phantoms under 18 team – we want to bring through local talent and give some of the young stars of tomorrow a taste of senior hockey in the UK. We had great success last season with players like Zandy Cleves and we’ll be looking to build on that this year”

Coach Mackintosh returns for another season

The Peterborough Islanders are delighted to welcome back Head Coach Ross Mackintosh for another season.

Aviemore born Mackintosh led the team in scoring last season, and is the clubs all time leading scorer with over 350 points in more than 200 games for the team. The fiery Scot will be keen to guide the Isles back in to the English National League Division 1 after a disappointing 2009/2010 campaign saw the team unable to beat the drop in to Division 2.

After confirming he would be back for another year, Mackintosh said “I am delighted to be back. We had a disappointing run last season, but I believe we have a good group here who are capable of a lot of things. I am confident that, with hard work, we can bounce straight back up in to Division 1”

Mackintosh also announced plans to look to strengthen the Islanders squad, beginning with on ice trials on Sunday July 4th at 4.30pm, with a charge of £10 per person to cover ice hire costs. Anyone interested in attending is asked to contact the club at islandersmarketing@yahoo.co.uk to confirm their interest.
